Introduction to blogging

A blog is a frequently updated diary. It is a place to express yourself to the world -- i.e. a place to share your thoughts and your passions. Really, it's anything you want it to be. Blogs are used from everything from providing commentary or news on a particular subject to personal online diaries and photo albums.

Navigating the blog

As you create entries in your blog, the blog engine creates a list of the most recent entries in reverse chronological order. The URI /blog/ shows the most recent entries in your blog.

Each blog entry also has a permanent link. For example, this blog entry has the following permanent link: Introduction to blogging.

Click the above two links and see how the URL changes in your browser's location bar.

Creating a new blog entry

New blogs can only be created at the /blog/ URI. A small icon file is visible on the page if you are authenticated as an administrator. If you do not see the icon, visit the administrator page, login, and come back to this page.

Click the edit icon file and create your new blog entry. Before creating blogs, think about what categories you want. You do not need to create categories, but it is recommended to do so since navigating your site will be much easier when you file the blog entries into categories.

Modifying and deleting blog entries

Blog entries can be modified file or deleted deleteby visiting the blog entries permanent link. For example, this blog entry can be deleted by visiting Introduction to blogging.

RSS (Rich Site Summary) is a format for delivering regularly changing web content. RSS is a non obtrusive method for delivering content and is becoming increasingly popular as a replacement for sending out mass emails.

The blog engine supports automatic RSS feed generation. You can enable the RSS feed on the RSS management page.

Using an External Editor

The BarracudaDrive CMS blog engine is compatible with any external editor that supports the MetaWeblog API. Popular editors include Microsoft's Windows Live Writer and the ScribeFire plugin for Firefox.

Installing Windows Live Writer

  1. Go to the Barracudadrive CMS configuration page
  2. Enter a username and password for the MetaWeblog
  3. Download Live Writer
  4. Start Live Writer
  5. Start the Weblog Account Wizard
  6. Choose "Another weblog service" on the "Choose Weblog Type" page
  7. Click the next button
  8. Enter the URL: http://your-server-name/blog/
  9. Enter the exact same username and password as you have set on the CMS configuration page
  10. Click the next button

Live Writer will now automatically connect to your BarracudaDrive blog. Live Writer will ask you if you want to download the styles from your blog. Select yes. You should decide what template you want to use on your blog prior to downloading the style. You can, at any time update, the style in Live Writer.

The following video shows how easy it is to publish a blog with pictures. Live writer allows you to drag and drop pictures into the editor. The editor automatically resizes the images to a size more suitable for your blog. By pressing the publish button, live writer automatically uploads all images you have in your blog entry to the BarracudaDrive server.
